The Windmill Microlending blog talked with Edna Ramirez Cerino, international medical graduate, career transition / patient navigator program coordinator at AIMGA (Alberta International Medical Graduate Association). AIMGA is a non-profit organization that helps international medical graduates (IMGs) integrate successfully into the Canadian healthcare system. They support IMGs with information, services and programs to help them navigate the licensure process, from their arrival to their residency or alternative career pathways. AIMGA also enables IMGs to make informed choices regarding their careers and offer clients knowledge, tools and resources to achieve their professional goals. Cerino immigrated to Canada from Mexico, where she worked as a clinic manager and physician in community health and preventive medicine.

Medical Career #1: Clinical and Surgical Assistant  

Edna Ramirez Cerino (ERC) says: These roles are great options for IMGs allowing you to utilize your skills in a hospital-based setting. Access to these career opportunities may be less time-consuming than the physician licensure pathway and can offer you hands-on Canadian health care experience. If you have specialization as a surgeon, it can also help familiarize you with Canadian surgical practices and processes.

Medical Career #3: Health Management and health administration roles 

ERC says: This is an in-demand health-care career track in Canada. Health care data and operations management is becoming increasingly complex with new digital, smart and cloud-based systems and tools necessitating medical professionals with advanced technological skills. IMGs can put their broad medical knowledge to use while upskilling their IT and tech knowledge in a health management or administrative role. These positions also offer another way to familiarize yourself with Canadian health care work environments as these roles are required in hospital or community health care settings.
