Windmill Microlending empowers skilled immigrants and refugees to build careers in Canada while reducing poverty and labour shortages. We do this by offering affordable loans along with client success coaching, financial literacy training, and mentorship for newcomers who lack access to mainstream credit.

Since 2005, Windmill has provided over 15,000 loans to clients in healthcare, IT, financial services, law, engineering, and many other fields to triple their incomes as a result of returning to their trained fields. Windmill is a registered Canadian charity supported by donations and community bonds from the private sector and grants from the public sector.

The role

Windmill's national Partnerships Team is tasked with growing and strengthening our network of external partners across learning institutions, regulatory bodies/associations, corporations and other non-profits/charities. This individual’s primary focus will be on leading and cultivating a team to identify high-impact partnership opportunities, develop and advance mutually beneficial partnership arrangements, and foster strong working relationships with partners to grow our number of clients nationwide. They will help strengthen the Partnerships team’s shared ways of working and build repeatable approaches that can scale across regions.

The Associate Director, Partnerships, is a business development role focused on training, developing and managing the team to build our pipeline of partners across Canada, in the most efficient and consistent manner. The top candidate will be a tenacious relationship builder and strong operator, with demonstrated research skills identifying and prioritizing organizations that can deliver meaningful outcomes for our clients. Reporting to the National Director, Stakeholder Relations and Quebec, the role is a key strategic contributor to Windmill’s broader Partnerships department, as part of a dynamic and committed management team. It supports national execution, internal coordination, and briefings for leadership.

Key responsibilities

Partner Development: (40%)

Key partners are organizations that refer eligible clients to Windmill and contribute to credible, repeatable pathways that help immigrants and newcomers re-establish or continue their careers in Canada

  • Turn partnership priorities into action by strengthening referral relationships that connect eligible clients to Windmill
  • Shape and strengthen strategic referral partnerships that can support sustained, repeatable client referrals, aligned with Windmill’s national priorities
  • Use sustained partner engagement and feedback to improve referral quality, alignment with clients needs, and consistency of referral follow-through
  • Stay current on industry trends, and emerging opportunities across newcomer integration, training pathways, credential recognition, and labour market access across Canada

Team leadership and development: (30%)

  • Manage and improve the performance of the Partnerships team so they connect more and higher-quality eligible clients to Windmill, through clear priorities, coaching and consistent follow-through
  • Support team members’ development through feedback, guidance, and shared leading practices
  • Strengthen shared ways of working across the Partnerships function to improve consistency, coordination, and results
  • Foster a positive, collaborative team culture that supports accountability, learning, and outcomes

Client acquisition targets: (20%)

  • Drive partner-enabled client growth by strengthening referral pathways and supporting delivery against Windmill’s loan targets
  • Help leverage data and automation to improve partner engagement, outreach, and scalability, including enabling smaller partners
  • Work closely with the marketing and communications team and the broader partnerships team to ensure alignment with organizational messaging and seek support to successfully deliver the outreach message
  • Monitor partnerships performance and outcomes, and provide clear updates and briefings to the National Director

Cross-functional collaboration: (10%)

  • Collaborate with key internal teams (e.g., Development, Marketing and Communications, TechOps, Client Success, Finance and Risk functions) to advance referral partnership initiatives that are client-centered, financially sound, and operationally viable
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and trade offs early, and work across teams to resolve them so priority partnerships move forward smoothly

You can take direction and priorities and turn them into productive referral partnerships through strong relationship-building, judgment, and follow-through. You are an excellent manager who works collaboratively with your colleagues and direct reports, and acts as a role model and mentor through your professionalism, work ethic, collegiality and warmth. You are highly accountable and follow through consistently. You build trust across teams through reliability, integrity, and strong judgment in how you prioritize opportunities and represent the organization externally.

In team meetings, you are comfortable articulating and defending a point of view that your colleagues and supervisor do not share, and having your thinking challenged and stretched by them. You are a great listener and an excellent communicator in meetings and can support decisions unreservedly, whichever way they go. You relish the opportunity to work with a National Director who shares your enthusiasm and energy for partnership development and works closely with you to support a partnership-oriented approach.

Qualifications and knowledge

  • Minimum 5 years’ building relationships and securing new B2B business relationships, including sales and relationship/account management experience
  • Two years of management experience and an aptitude for managing, motivating, and inspiring a small staff team.
  • Personal or professional knowledge of the immigrant experience
  • Experience working in, or in partnership with, mission-driven or impact-oriented organizations
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook)

Competencies and characteristics

  • A partnerships and sales professional with 5-plus years of experience in B-2-B business development and a track record of closing and growing partnerships
  • Experience building and managing a B-2-B partnerships or sales pipeline with a proven ability to initiate, develop and enhance key relationships that create measurable outcomes
  • Strategic thinker with strong planning and logistical skills; motivated by ambitious targets for growth
  • The ability to prioritize opportunities according to their potential value; utilizing strong organizational and execution skills
  • A skilled communicator who engages and motivates partners, corporate stakeholders, staff, board members, and investors
  • A roll-up-your-sleeves team player, eager to embrace and execute new ideas in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Excellent English writing, speaking, and presentation skills; in person and on digital platforms
  • French language skills are an asset
  • Highly motivated to address labour market integration challenges internationally trained/educated immigrants face
  • Technically literate; experience working within a CRM database, and capable of enhancing team member’s training

  • Strategic referral partnerships are strengthened in ways that improve referral quality, consistency, and alignment to client needs
  • Partnerships insights and considerations are surfaced in a timely manner to support sound internal decision-making and drive results

Compensation and benefits

  • Starting salary range $105,000-$110,000 annually, based on skills and experience required for the role
  • Hybrid work solution with a minimum two (2) days in office, up to three (3) days from home in Montreal or fully remote in Ottawa
